Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

Pineappl ("we", "us") operates the Pineappl app and community. If you have questions about this policy or your data, contact us at privacy@pineappl.nl.

2. Information we collect

Account	Email address, password (stored as a salted hash — we never store or can see your actual password), date of birth
Profile	Display name, photos, bio, body/lifestyle details you choose to share, location, interests, what you're looking for. If you enter a city, we convert it into an approximate map coordinate (city-level only) so Discover can show/sort by distance.
Device location (only if you choose)	Only when you ask for it, we read your device's location. In a chat, you can share it with that one match, once or live for a few hours; it expires automatically. With Nearby (Discover > Nearby), you can let other members see that you're close by: we round your position to an area of about 1 km before storing it, never store the exact spot, and others only see a distance range such as "under 1 km" — only while they share theirs too. Your position disappears 4 hours after its last update, or straight away when you turn Nearby off. Pineappl never reads your location in the background.
Activity	Matches, messages, likes, profile visits, lists/albums you create, event RSVPs, invite links you create and who signed up through them, "met in real life" confirmations between matches, and a record of which of your photos other members have viewed (used only to help trace a leaked photo, see below — never shown to other members)
Technical	IP address, device type, approximate screen size, login timestamps, and when you were last active (used to show "online" status and sort Discover by recent activity)
Payment	If you subscribe to a paid plan, our payment processor handles your card details directly — we never see or store full card numbers

We do not ask for or require government ID. Age is self-declared and reviewed as part of profile approval.

3. Why we collect it

• To provide the service — creating your profile, showing you other members, enabling messaging, matching, events, and lists.
• To keep the community safe — every new profile is reviewed before it becomes visible to others, and reports of inappropriate behavior are investigated. IP addresses are used specifically for fraud and abuse investigation, not for advertising. If you block another member, our moderation team can see who blocked whom. This also means that, if other members block you, our team can see that and how often it happens. We use this only to spot members who cause problems for many others, and it never leads to action by itself: a person always reviews it first. Members are never told who blocked them.
• To operate your account — verifying your email, managing your subscription tier, and sending account-related notifications (e.g. a new match, a message, or a warning before something you created is due to be removed under your plan's limits). If you invite someone or were invited, we record who invited whom, so we can give the reward once the new member is approved; our team can see this too. We never contact the people you invite: you send the link yourself. If you choose to, anyone who opens your invite link sees your profile name while the link is still valid; otherwise it only says they were invited by a Pineappl member.
• To improve the app — we record which features are used (for example that a page was opened or a message was sent, never its content or your location), so we can see which features are used often and which aren't, and on what kind of device. Our team only ever sees totals, never what an individual member did.

4. Sensitive information and your consent

Pineappl only processes information you enter or upload yourself. Because Pineappl is a community for couples and singles exploring non-monogamy, much of that information is sensitive under the GDPR (Article 9): it says something about your sex life and sexual orientation — your profile details and photos, but also simply being a member, and what you do in the app, such as likes, matches and messages. If you choose to fill in your ethnicity, that is sensitive information too. Filling in sexuality and ethnicity is always optional.

We process this information only on the basis of your explicit consent, which we ask for separately when you sign up (separate from accepting the Terms), and only to show your profile to other members and to help you find matches. We record when you gave it and to which version of the text. If we change that text, we ask you again.

Couples: in a couple’s profile, one of you enters information about the other. Before that information is saved, you confirm that you both agree to the information about each of you being shared on Pineappl.

Withdrawing consent: you can withdraw your consent at any time by deleting your account in Settings > Delete account, which removes your profile, photos, matches and messages (see section 7). Pineappl can’t work without this information, so there is no way to keep using it after withdrawing. Withdrawing doesn’t affect what was lawfully done before.

5. Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in these situations:

• Other members — your profile, photos, and public activity are visible to other registered members, exactly as described on-screen wherever that content is shown (e.g. a locked album is only shared with members you explicitly grant access to).
• Service providers — we use third-party infrastructure to send transactional email (e.g. verification links) and push notifications (e.g. new match alerts). These providers process data only on our instructions and only for that purpose.
• Payment processors — if you subscribe to a paid plan, your payment is handled by a licensed payment service provider. We receive confirmation that a payment succeeded, not your card details.
• Legal requirements — if required by law, or to protect the safety of our members or the public.

6. How long we keep it

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active, or until you delete it yourself in Settings (the gear on your profile) > Delete account. If we decide not to admit your profile, your account and everything in it is deleted automatically 30 days after we tell you (you can delete it yourself before then). If you register but never verify your email, or your profile is still waiting for review or on our waitlist, your account is not automatically deleted — contact us if you'd like it removed. Records required for fraud prevention, dispute resolution, or legal compliance (such as payment records) may be kept for longer, as required by law — deleting your account disconnects those records from your profile rather than erasing them outright.

Records of which features were used (see section 3) are deleted automatically after 13 months.

7. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can delete your account yourself at any time in Settings > Delete account, which immediately and permanently removes your profile, photos, matches, and messages — including, for any shared conversation, the messages the other participant sent to you. For any other request (access, correction, export, or if you'd rather we handle the deletion), email privacy@pineappl.nl — we'll respond within a reasonable time and verify your identity before making changes.

8. Cookies and local storage

The app uses your browser's local storage to keep you signed in and to remember preferences (such as Discover filters), not to track you across other websites. We do not use third-party advertising trackers.

9. Security

Given what members share here, we treat security as part of the product. In practice that means:

• Encrypted connections — the app is only served over HTTPS with a trusted certificate.
• Passwords — stored only as a salted bcrypt hash; nobody at Pineappl can see your password. Repeated sign-in attempts are rate-limited.
• Sessions you control — changing your password signs you out on every other device, and an email change has to be approved from your current address first.
• Separate staff access — our moderation tools can only be used with dedicated admin accounts, never with a member account.
• Reviewed profiles and private photos — every profile is reviewed before others can see it, private albums are only visible to members you choose, and photos can carry the viewer's name (see below).
• Stored in the EU — your profile, photos and messages are stored on servers in the European Union.

No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your personal data, we report it to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) within 72 hours where the law requires it, and tell affected members directly if it's likely to put them at high risk.

10. Photo leak protection

Screenshots can't be technically prevented, so we use two measures instead, both aimed at accountability rather than blocking access: we keep a record of which member viewed a given photo and when (visible only to us, never to other members, and used only to investigate a reported leak); and when you view another member's photo, your own display name may be visibly stamped onto it, so a leaked copy carries an identifying trace. A photo's owner can turn this stamp off for their own photos in Settings → Privacy; a viewer cannot opt out of their own name appearing on a photo they view, since that would defeat the purpose.

11. Age requirement

Pineappl is for adults only. You must be 18 or older to create an account. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and we remove any account found to belong to a minor.

12. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
